Call Cable Locate at 684-UDIG (8344) before you dig to prevent service interruption, property damage, and costly repairs.
The locating service operates Monday to Friday, 8am to 4 pm, at no charge. A minimum of 48-hours is required. Weekend, holiday or outside regular working hour visits may be subject to overtime charges.
Note:
The use of power shovels, trenching or earth-boring machines, picks, shovels or bars may accidentally damage or sever buried cable or pipeline causing injury or death. It is dangerous and unlawful to dig mechanically within one metre of a utility plant.

TBAYTEL REQUIREMENTS FOR SERVICE PRIOR TO BUILDING OR RENOVATING
TBayTel requirements for service in the City of Thunder Bay for new single-family homes including bungalows, townhouses, two storey serviced by individual underground or aerial cable.
Policy: Single Family Housing - City Of Thunder Bay
- TBayTel requires that all new single-family homes have outside mounting bracket, conduit and grounding facilities installed by the home owner/contractor.
- TBayTel will provide to the customer or their contractor the necessary materials to be installed on the side of the house next to the Hydro meter base location. Instructions on how to install this mounting bracket, grounding plate and conduit are provided in the booklet "Installation Manual for the Protector box NID 4600-T and mounting bracket".
- In areas designated as underground service TBayTel will install underground service cable to the outside foundation wall and into the mounted bracket and 1 meter of cable left exposed at bracket.
- In areas designated as aerial, an aerial service drop will be installed. If underground service is required then all trenching from the pole or pedestal to the house will be at owner's expense and installed as per Canadian Electrical Code Section 60 at a depth of between 450mm to 600mm with 400mm separation to hydro cables either vertically or horizontally. TBayTel will provide to the owner the necessary underground cable to be installed from house to pole or pedestal with 10 meters left at base of pole or pedestal and at house 1 meter out of bracket installed by home owner or contractor. The Nid-4600-T will be installed upon request for service.
- In the construction of new houses the inside wiring is usually concealed. The responsibility for installing concealed inside wiring is the owners/ contractor responsibility. TBayTel will furnish to the owner/contractor the necessary inside cable to be installed in star fashion from the Tel backboard location to each outlet. Instructions are provided in the booklet "How to do your own wiring" supplied by TBayTel. Failure to install concealed wiring will result in open wire being installed.
- Upon a service order being placed for service, TBayTel will install Nid-4600-T if owner/contractor has installed mounting bracket. As per order TBayTel will install required jacks, plates and cross connects as required by order. Please note that first jack is part of the service charge, extension jacks are extra and there will be extra charges to energize these outlets. Customer services will provide activation charges.
- Failure to install mounting bracket or inside wiring will result in delay of service.
- TBayTel will not be liable for any defacement or damage to customer's premises resulting from installation, maintenance or removal of its equipment and wiring, except TBayTel will make good any damage caused by its negligence. In cases where the customer is not the owner of such premises, they shall indemnify and save the Company harmless from claims for such defacement or damage.
