How do I transfer data / backup my Android phone?

How do I back up my Android?

Backup to the Cloud

Android phones do have a cloud service offered by google that can do a backup of your phone.

  1. Ensure the phone is connected to WiFi and plugged into a power source
  2. Swipe down from the top of the phone and tap on Settings
  3. Tap on Accounts & Backup
  4. Tap on Back Up Data
  5. Enable what parts of the handset to backup
    • Call Logs
    • Messages
    • Contacts
    • Calendar
    • Clock
    • Settings
    • Home Screen
    • Apps
  6. Tap on Back Up Now

There will be slight differences between android devices. Some bigger differences are:

  • Google Pixel: The backup settings are nested in the System main settings menu.
  • OnePlus: You need to download the Phone Clone app from OnePlus. It’s all handled there.

 

Backup using Google Drive

  1. Ensure the phone is connected to WiFi and plugged into a power source
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Accounts and Backup.
  4. Tap on Backup Data under Google Drive.
  5. Select your backup details:
    • Apps
    • Photos
    • SMS messages
    • Call history
    • Settings
    • Account Data.
  6. Tap on Back Up Now to start the backup.

You can also enable auto backup and the phone will be able to do backups on a regular basis for you.

 

Backup to a PC

  1. Ensure the phone is connected to WiFi.
  2. Plug your phone into the computer using the USB cable (typically the charging cable).
  3. Let your PC do an initial set-up, so your Android files are visible from your PC.
  4. You will get a notification on your Android phone about the USB connection. Click on it.
  5. Make sure that File Transfer or USB File Transfer is enabled.
  6. Copy all of your Android Files.
  7. Paste them in a dedicated folder on your PC.
