Why is data not working on my Android?

Troubleshooting tips to try if data is not working on your Android phone.

Here are a few troubleshooting tips to try if data is not working on your Android phone.

Locked up

Sometimes the functionality of services on the phone can lockup and a Restart is necessary to restore access to these services. To Restart your Android phone:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to bring up the quick settings panel, then swipe down again so it takes up the whole screen
  2. Tap the Power icon in the top-right corner
  3. Tap Restart

Or

  1. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time for three seconds
  2. When you see a screen for Power off, Restart, and Emergency mode, tap Restart

Once the phone is restarted, test to see if data access is restored.

Mobile Data Off

If you still do not have data access, the next step is to ensure Mobile Data is enabled:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the phone with two fingers to bring up the quick settings panel
  2. If the Mobile Data button is dim, tap to turn it on
  3. Test to see if your data access is restored

Data Limitations

On an android phone you can enable data warnings as well as data limits. This functionality allows you to set a maximum amount of data you want to use on the handset and the phone itself will block data.

  1. Slide down from the top of the screen then tap the gear icon
  2. Select Connections then select Data Usage
  3. Check to see if Data Saver is on (if on, it will limit data access to all apps)
  4. Check Billing cycle and data warning
    • Confirm your Billing cycle date is your Invoice Date on your bill
    • Check if Set Data Limit is enabled
    • Check the Data Limit amount as being your plan’s data amount

Reset Network Settings

The last thing to try would be to reset the network settings in the phone. Be aware that resetting your network settings will cause the phone to forget WiFi passwords and Bluetooth paired devices.

  1. Slide down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon
  2. Select General Management then Reset
  3. Tap Reset Network Settings (You may be prompted to enter a PIN; enter your security PIN)
  4. Tap Reset to confirm
  5. Test to see if your data access is restored
