10-digit Dialing

Understanding 10-digit Dialing

In order to enable 9-8-8, a new national 3-digit number for mental health and suicide prevention launching November 30, 2023, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has mandated 10-digit dialing across Canada, including northern Ontario and the 807-area code. This change means that for local calls customers must always use 10 digits (807 + 7-digit phone number). Tbaytel and all service providers in the 807 area code will be implementing 10-digit dialing for both mobility and landline networks beginning March 27.

Tbaytel will be taking a phased approach to implementing 10-digit dialing. For Tbaytel Mobility customers this change will take effect on March 27th. For Tbaytel Home Phone and Business Voice customers, Tbaytel is in the process of upgrading its existing landline and voice network necessary to support this change with the completion scheduled for November 2023. This timeline will support the successful implementation of 9-8-8 on November 30, 2023.

When will 10-digit Dialing take effect?

Starting March 27, 2023 for Tbaytel Mobility Customers

All Tbaytel mobility customers need to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the 7-digit phone number – for all local calls originating from a cell phone including cell to cell calls and cell to home phone or business voice calls. If the area code is not dialed, the caller will hear a reminder message before the call is completed. Starting on May 25, 10-digit dialing will be mandatory for some Tbaytel Mobility customers with full implementation for all Mobility customers by May 31: residents and businesses need to dial the area code followed by the 7-digit number for all local calls originating from a cell phone. If the 10-digit number is not dialed, the call will not be completed.

Starting November 15, 2023 for Tbaytel Home Phone and Business Voice Customers

Residential and Business customers need to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the 7-digit phone number – for all local calls originating from a home phone or a business voice line. If the area code is not dialed, the caller will hear a reminder message before the call is completed. On January 15, 2024, 10-digit dialing will be mandatory: residents and businesses need to dial the area code followed by the 7-digit number for all local calls originating from a home phone or a business voice line. If the 10-digit number is not dialed, the call will not be completed.
