How do I use TV Voice Technology with Amazon?

Information on using TV Voice Technology with Amazon

Use of Tbaytel Voice Technology for Alexa requires:

  1. Amazon.ca account

  2. Amazon Alexa app

  3. Active myTbaytel account

  4. Alexa device such as Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Plus or Echo Show

    • If you have not yet set up your Alexa device, please take a moment to set up the device by following the directions provided by Amazon with your device

    • You may be able to use just the Amazon Alexa app from your mobile device, if it’s compatible

Setting up TV Voice Technology is simple:

  1. Enable the Tbaytel TV skill

    • Open the Amazon Alexa App on your mobile device

      • You may have to log into your Amazon account

    • Tap the hamburger menu at the top left corner of the screen

    • Select Skills & Games

    • Click the magnifying glass in the top right corner

    • Search for the Tbaytel TV Skill by typing "Tbaytel TV" in the search field

    • Find the Tbaytel TV skill and tap “Enable to Use”

  2. Link the Tbayel TV skill to your TV account

    • Go to settings in the Tbaytel TV skill

    • Tap "Link Account" to link your account

    • Enter your myTbaytel account user name and password to sign in

  3. Invoke the Tbaytel TV skill by using the term "tv service." For example, “Alexa, ask tv service to...” or “Alexa, tell tv service to...”

TIP: If using an Alexa device, position it close to where you typically sit when watching TV so the device hears your commands instead of the sound from the TV.

TIP: When you first install the skill, it is recommended you set the receiver, to ensure you are controlling your TV of choice (see below “Set or change the receiver” for more details).

Voice commands currently available

Change channel by name or number

Ask Alexa to change channel by channel name or number. Use any of the following voice commands to change the channel:

Alexa, ask tv service to tune to [channel name]
Alexa, tell tv service to go to [channel name]
Alexa, ask tv service to change to [channel number]

TIP: Alexa responds better if you don’t say the word “channel” before the channel name or number, and if you say the channel number in full. For example, say “Alexa, ask tv service to change to five hundred twenty-six” rather than “Alexa, ask tv service to change to five-two-six.”

Play a currently-airing program

Tell Alexa to tune to a show that’s currently playing. Say the following to tune to a specific show:

Alexa, tell tv service to play [name of any currently playing program]

Search programs by program name or actor

Ask Alexa to search for a program by name or actor. Search for shows with one of the following commands:

Alexa, tell tv service to find [program name]
Alexa, ask tv service to search for [actor name]

Pause, rewind, fast-forward and play

Ask Alexa to pause, rewind, fast-forward and play live TV. Use the following language to pause, rewind, fast-forward and play.

Alexa, tell tv service to pause
Alexa, ask tv service to rewind
Alexa, tell tv service to fast forward
Alexa, ask tv service to play

TIP: Play and fast-forward will only work after you have paused or rewound a program.

Set or change the receiver

Ask Alexa to set which set top box you want to control. Use one of the following voice commands to change the receiver:

Alexa, ask tv service to change the receiver
Alexa, tell tv service to change the receiver
Alexa, ask tv service to change the set top box

TIP: Alexa’s response to the command is that it will show a number on all your TVs, and you say the number that is on the TV you want to control. The command only stays on screen for a few seconds, so be prepared!
