Something is beeping in my Tbaytel equipment

What to do when sound is emitting from your Tbaytel equipment.

The only thing in the Tbaytel equipment that will beep or let out a long tone is the Battery Backups or UPS as they are called. These systems are put in place to maintain connectivity despite a power outage. They will beep if the outlet they are plugged into has no power; they will let out a long tone if they have received a surge.

There typically are only 2 places a UPS will be

  1. Where the fibre line comes into the house to keep power to the fibre terminal in the case of a power outage so phone services continue to work. Internet and DTV services will go down after approximately 5 minutes until power is restored.
  2. Where the modem is located to keep Tbaytel connectivity up as long as possible during a brief power outage.

Fibre UPS

There are 2 models of UPS that will be where the Fibre line comes into the house. There is the Cyberpower or the Precision Power unit, eitherwill be mounted near your electrical panel and the Tbaytel Demarcation.

Both of these units will beep when the battery is supplying power to the Optical Network Terminal. The DC light will be lit and potentially flashing. They both have an Alarm Silence button that will quiet these beeps. When power is restored the unit should stop beeping. If the battery has failed on this unit there will be an alarm that beeps once every 15 minutes and the battery light will be lit red. Call Tbaytel Technical Support (807) 623-4400 as we will need to replace the unit.

Modem UPS

When a customer has Digital TV service with Tbaytel, to protect the Tbaytel equipment from power outage/surge damage we install a UPS where the modem is located. This UPS will have either 8 or 6 power outlets. Four of these outlets are connected to the Battery and the rest are not. It will be indicated which outlets are the ones that are connected to the battery.

To silence the beeping on this unit there are a couple of things to check.

  1. Does the outlet the UPS is plugged into at the wall have power? Easiest way to check is to plug something else into the outlet & see if it gets power. If it does not; this is an electrical issue and you will need to look into your electrical system
  2. If it does have power, try to do a reset on the UPS to reset the box.
    1. Turn the UPS off by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds.
    2. Unplug at least one piece of equipment from the UPS
    3. Wait 10 seconds, reset the circuit breaker by pressing the reset button on the side of the UPS
    4. Power the UPS back on by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds. The unit should beep at you 2x and then stop beeping.

If the unit will not power on or continue beeping call Tbaytel Technical Support (807) 623-4400as the unit may need replacing.

If the unit’s Electrical Wiring/Building Wiring fault light is lit - This LED indicator will illuminate to warn the user that a wiring problem exists, such as bad ground, missing ground or reversed wiring. If this is illuminated, disconnect all electrical equipment from the outlet and have an electrician verify the outlet is properly wired. The unit will not provide surge protection without being plugged into a grounded and properly wired wall outlet.
