Marathon, Ontario (Apr. 5, 2022) – Tbaytel and the Town of Marathon are celebrating as the town is set to become the next northern Ontario community to have access to Tbaytel’s state-of-the-art fibre technology later this year.

Local leaders joined members of Tbaytel’s Executive Management Team on Tuesday, April 5 at Tbaytel’s brand new Marathon Tbaytel Store to hear details for Tbaytel’s Fibre roll-out that will see 1,875 residents and businesses in Marathon have access to Tbaytel’s complete five-bundle suite of products and services – including mobility, phone, Internet, TV and security – all from a single provider at competitively priced rates. Originally announced last year as part of $4.2 million in funding from the provincial government to the Town of Marathon and Township of Terrace Bay, the project also includes a multi-million dollar capital investment from Tbaytel and commitment towards time and resources for the design, build and implementation.

“We know that now more than ever, reliable internet is essential in our daily lives. With more of our rural areas connected, more businesses can participate in the global digital economy, more students can learn and more families can keep in touch with loved ones, said Tbaytel President and CEO Dan Topatigh.

“Vast terrain and low population density make it a challenge for Tbaytel alone to deliver this vital infrastructure to rural northern Ontario. Bringing true fibre right to the door of 1,875 new customers throughout Marathon is only possible when strong leadership makes funding a priority and great partnerships, like the one Tbaytel has with the Town of Marathon.  Tbaytel would like to thank the province of Ontario for its investment and the people of northern Ontario for their continued support of Tbaytel.”

Fibre optic technology services customers with virtually unlimited bandwidth through a direct connection to their home or business. In addition to the benefits that can be felt across multiple sectors ranging from education, health care, social services and information technology, access to fibre technology can also mean an exceptional telecommunications and entertainment experience for customers in their homes.

Marathon Mayor Rick Dumas said Tbaytel Fibre means his community can fully participate in the digital economy. The brand new Marathon Tbaytel Store will also bring employment opportunities and growth to the town.

“I am thrilled that Tbaytel is opening a retail store in Marathon. This will provide our residents and the surrounding communities the opportunity to have access to the most up-to-date equipment and of course services that are provided by Tbaytel,” said Dumas.

“This store, along with Tbaytel bringing Fibre to the Town of Marathon is a true testament that Tbaytel sees our community as a true commercial hub of the North Shore.”

Marathon joins Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Dryden, Kenora and Keewatin as northern Ontario communities where Tbaytel Fibre is available. Pre-sales for Tbaytel Fibre in Marathon begin on April 10 with service availability expected to the majority of residents and businesses by June 1. The Marathon Tbaytel Store will open to the public April 11.
