Canadian Text with 9-1-1 Service for the DHHSI Community

Learn all about the Text 9-1-1 service which enables Canadian members of the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired (DHHSI) community to communicate with 9-1-1 centres via text message.

On January 24, 2013 the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced plans for enhancements to 9-1-1 services to enable Canadian members of the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired (DHHSI) community to communicate with 9-1-1 call centres via text message.

All telephone and wireless companies were required to upgrade their networks to support the Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1) feature by January 24, 2014; however, 9-1-1 call centres across Canada are still working to complete technology upgrades.

Currently, T9-1-1 is only available in select regions of the country and it will be implemented by 9-1-1 call centres in different municipalities or regions at different time periods over the next several years.

For more information, please visit the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) T9-1-1 website here.
