If you are experiencing an issue with dial tone, it may be an issue with your physical phone, below are the steps to troubleshoot having no dial tone on either a wired and cordless phone, after each step, check to see if dial tone has been restored.

If you have no dial tone on a hard wired phone set

  1. Check both ends of the phone cord attached to the phone and phone jack to make sure that they are both securely plugged in.  (If the clip is broken, you will likely need to replace the cord)
  2. Check both ends of the curly cord to ensure it is securely attached to the handset you put up to your ear and the phone base. (If the clip is broken, you will likely need to replace the cord)
  3. Try plugging the phone into a different phone jack, if you get dial tone, the problem is likely related to the jack.
  4. If you have Fibre Home Phone: If none of the above has restored dial tone take the phone to your fibre optic terminal and plug it directly into the phone port on the fibre optic terminal (ONT, pictured below).  There are two phone ports on some models of the ONT (716), plug your phone into the port labeled 1.

  5. If you have dial tone right off the fibre optic terminal but not when plugged into any phone jack you have an inside wiring issue which will need to be fixed. You can attempt to repair it yourself or you can have a Tbaytel technician repair it.  If you choose to have a technician fix the issue and you do not subscribe to wirecare (link to wire care site) charges may apply.

If you have no dial tone on a portable phone set

  1. Check both ends of the phone cord attached to the phone and phone jack to make sure that they are both securely plugged in.  (If the clip is broken, you will likely need to replace the cord)
  2. If the phone cord is secure at both ends the portable phone set may need a reboot or a reset because they operate wirelessly and can sometimes lose communication with the additional sets, which do not have a physical phone cord, only a power supply.
  3. Gather all of the handsets at the main base station.
  4. On the back of each phone set there is a cover which slides off and there are batteries underneath. Remove all batteries from all the handsets and unplug the power cable from the main base.
  5. Put the batteries back into each handset and plug back in the power supply to the main base and check for dial tone.
  6. If you still have no dial tone try plugging the phone into a different phone jack and check for dial tone.  It is possible a phone jack has gone bad.
  7. If you have Fibre Home Phone: If none of the above has restored dial tone take the phone to your fibre optic terminal and plug it directly into the phone port on the ONT (pictured below).  There are two phone ports on some models of the ONT (716), plug your phone into the port labeled 1.
