Why are there distortions on my Legacy TV feed?

Distortions, fuzzy signal, static, etc.

Though it is unusual, Legacy TV can get distortions. There are a few causes to this happening and a few things you can try to correct before calling Technical Support. Distortions can occur on one, some or all channels depending on the cause.

Signal to the PVR or SetTop Box

  1. Check to ensure that all cable connections on the PVR/Set top box and TV set are secure.
    • Follow each cable to its other end and ensure it is attached securely
  2. Ensure that none of the cables show any kind of damage
    • No kinking of the cable
    • No frayed or cracked insulation
    • No broken cable ends
  3. Power the set top box off, leave it off for 1 minute and power it back on again.
  4. If the box is wireless - check the wifi signal bars on the STB - if any are red or if it flashes back and forth between green & red; call technical support (807) 623-4400.

Ventilation issue

Legacy Set Top Boxes do require proper ventilation - if the unit is covered or in too small of an enclosed space - the units will in essence suffocate, causing the electronics within to overheat causing video distortion.

  1. Remove any items or equipment that is stacked on top of the STB
  2. If it is in an enclosed space, ensure that it has at least 2 inches of space above, behind and on either side of the unit.
  3. Ensure that if it is in a cabinet it is not enclosed - this can also cause a lack of ventilation.
  4. Ensure it is not in a location that gets direct sunlight or too close to a heat source (radiator, heater) that can cause heat damage

Broadcaster issue

Occasionally the issue can actually come from a broadcaster. These broadcasters can have issues with their high definition feeds that they send to us to provide. If the tips above do not help, call Tbaytel Technical Support (807) 623-4400 to check for any outages or issues with any of the channels.
